PORTAL II· Nov 2021

Portal II is an interactive installation consisting of five programmed LCDs and a camera module. It's an iteration of my previous work, further exploring the nature of entropy, this time by creating a data singularity through digital-age portals.

The work was shown during the two-day exhibition "α-Version" together with Laila Kamil in Leipzig, "Institut für Alles Mögliche" \ Tapetenwerk.

The displays are arranged to symbolise four guiding stars: γ2 Sgr, δ Sgr, ε Sgr and θ Oph, which help to locate the black hole (singularity) at the centre of our home galaxy. Attached to the central LCD is a camera module that feeds motion data into a QR code generation algorithm.

QR codes are algorithmically generated and displayed on the central display. The data they encode is either static or highly entropic/unpredictable. Only through an undeterministic presence in front of the installation, such as a visitor looking at the central unit, can a state of high entropy be achieved. Through highly entropic QR codes, all possible data permutations could occur at any time, creating the concept of a 'data singularity'.
